The Motion Picture Association of America(MPAA) designed movie ratings in 1968.  The Hays Code known as the censorship system was developed to prevent offensive scenes in the films and prevent government interference in making films. In this article, you can learn about movie ratings and its importance.

Rating Methods

Rating methods are introduced with the purpose of choosing an appropriate movie for the children under the age of 17. The rating board Classifications and Rating Administration(CARA) handle the rating process. It is made up of independent parents who give ratings to films that help the parents to get clear, concise information about the content of the film. Bases on the content they can determine whether the movie is suitable for their children or not. Most of the films are rated before released. They consider things like language, sex, drug use, violence, and other situations while rating. The rating letters(G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17) are used to rate the movies. You can check the meaning of the ratings below:

G: It is for General Audience, All ages admitted. They have no violence, nudity, sex, violence and other matters that concern parents. But it does not mean that “G” rating is a children’s movie.

PG: It means Parental Guidance Suggested. Some material may not be suitable for the children. Parents have to investigate about contents like language, violence or sex in the movie. They can decide after properly checking the specific movie rating for the film.

PG-13: It means Parents Strongly Cautioned. In this rating, some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13. Parents should restrict their children under 13(pre-teen ages) from watching this type of movies.

R: It means restricted. This movie contains adult material. Movie theatre checks the IDs of those who book tickets to check whether children under 17 are purchasing tickets because they should be accompanied by parents or should be above the age 18 to watch it.

NC-17: It indicates that No one 17 and Under Permitted. This type of films are too adult for children and they should be restricted from watching it.
